Affected crops
Ceratitis capitata
The Mediterranean fruit fly attacks all types of fruits. The larvae live inside the fruit and prefer those with a sweet and fleshy pulp like peaches, but they also cause damage to figs, apricots, oranges, mandarins, persimmons, grapes, pears, pomegranates, mangos, custard apples, papayas, loquats, plums, quinces, etc.
The damage is caused by the female taking a bite out and laying her eggs inside the fruits that are beginning to ripen, at the moment they start to change colour. The wound is a point of entry for microorganisms to start decaying the fruit. In addition to this, the larvae excavate galleries inside the fruit, increasing the level of decomposition and causing the fruit to fall to the ground.

Bactrocera oleae
The Olive fruit fly is considered to be the most harmful pest of olive trees in the regions where it is present, even affecting the quantity and quality of most cultivated areas.
Damage is caused by second stage larvae and especially third stage larvae. They consume a significant amount of the olive’s pulp, which consequently reduces the quality of the oil. Part of the production is lost, as the olives that have been attacked fall prematurely from the tree. At the same time, the bite marks depreciate the value of the table olives.
